Why Do Band Saw Blade Teeth Strip or Wear Too Fast?

Stripped teeth, missing tips, or a blade that dulls in a few days is rarely explained by “the blade is too soft.” More often, too few or too many teeth are in the cut, feed exceeds what the teeth can carry, the blade was never broken in, or the tooth hit scale, inclusions, or a weld. Look at whether a whole tooth is gone, only the tip, or one side of the set is flattened—then match that to material and feed. Do not start by ordering a more expensive family.

Stripped teeth versus normal wear

  • Normal wear: tips dull gradually, the cut slows and runs hotter, but the teeth are still there.
  • Chipped tips: corners break off suddenly, often with a shock noise.

Too few teeth or too many

A common shop rule is that enough teeth must work in the thickness of the cut at once. Too few, and each tooth takes a shock; too many, and chips cannot leave. That is not a single TPI you can reuse on every shape. Solids often need a coarser pitch; thin-wall tube and sheet often need a finer one. Confirm against material, wall thickness, and the saw. What to do next

If the blade is still intact: lower feed, confirm clamping and guides, and do not “try the next bar” on a blade that already lost teeth. FAQ

Do stripped teeth mean I must switch to a carbide blade?

No. Many stripping problems are TPI, feed, and break-in. A harder tip will not fix shock or packed chips. Only discuss a different construction when material, output, and current bi-metal results all fail to line up—and confirm that case separately.

Can I keep cutting after a few teeth are missing?

Missing teeth raise the shock on the teeth that remain. That often leads to more stripping, a crooked cut, or a broken band. Stop and inspect. Do not validate the next workpiece on a damaged blade.

Should wood and metal tooth failures be handled the same way?

The shock logic is similar, but wood also involves knots, embedded metal, frozen stock, and tooth direction. TCT also depends on tip welding. Do not copy a metal-saw feed habit onto a wood saw.

Which photos help on an RFQ?
