Stainless steel work-hardens more readily than carbon steel of a similar size. If the blade glazes the surface, dwells in the kerf, or feed starts and stops, the next pass cuts a harder skin—so the job feels like the blade “cannot cut,” teeth chip, and life collapses. Selection has to include section, solid versus tube, the saw, and the old specification. Many common stainless workpieces are still discussed as bi-metal; see What Can M42 Bi-Metal Cut?. “Stainless” is not a synonym for carbide.
How stainless differs from carbon steel
- The material hardens under rubbing heat. Blade speed is often lower than for the same-size carbon steel, but the number is saw- and section-specific—not a factory constant to copy.
- The cut needs to stay engaged. Lifting out or pausing “to look” often thickens the hardened layer.
- Coolant and chip clearance matter more. Dry or interrupted coolant lets tips glaze or overheat.
- Tube, profile, and solid bar change TPI more than the alloy name does.
Pitch, tooth form, and coolant
Too coarse: thin-wall stainless tube has too few teeth in the cut, so shock, stripped teeth, and drift show up. Too fine: chips pack the gullets, the blade rides up, and it glazes. There is no universal “stainless tooth form.” The old tooth shape, the cut quality, and current life tell more than marketing names. Say how coolant is applied and whether the nozzle actually hits the kerf.

Do not grind stainless as if it were mild steel
If sparks drop off and the kerf turns shiny, reduce speed and keep feed so the teeth enter; do not add pressure and polish the face. A surface that already hardened may need a new start or removal of that skin. That is process control, not a product rename. FAQ
Do 304 and 316 need different blades?
Not necessarily a different family. Both are often discussed as bi-metal; section, wall, and parameters usually matter more. Grade plus size plus the old blade is more useful than ordering a “316-only” blade.
Does stainless always need a fine TPI?
Thin-wall tube often needs a finer pitch; solids may need a coarser one. One TPI for all stainless tends to strip teeth or pack chips.
Can I cut stainless with no coolant?
Some shops cut dry or with minimal lubrication. The risk is glazing and overheated tips. State the coolant method on the RFQ; do not reuse wet-cutting parameters.
The same blade still cuts carbon steel but dies on stainless. Wrong blade?
It may be parameters and work-hardening, not the wrong class. Check glazing, dwell, TPI, and coolant before you change construction.
